Raša
Raša is a town and municipality in the inner part of the Raša Inlet in the south-eastern part of Istria.
Raša town is situated along the valley of Krapan brook. Although originally built to serve the needs of miners working in the nearby coal mines, today Raša gives a new meaning to its history of town planning and proudly emphasizes its value in the context of contemporary urbanism.
Raša was build in accordance with ideas of modern architecture and the whole town was planned and designed by just one man – Gustav Pulitzer Finali, an architect from Trieste. He envisioned a town adapted to the 21st century and situated it perfectly in the green Istrian valley enriched with Krapan – a tributary of the Raša river after which the town was named. Situated at the central square, the church of St. Barbara – patron saint of miners – resembles an overturned coal wagon with a bell tower shaped as a miner's lamp. Moreover, within the tower there's a museum dedicated to miners and their life.
The town centre includes a large square with caffe bar, grocery shop, pharmacy, administrative offices. Overlooking the square is the church of Santa Barbara (patron saint of miners). The church is in the shape of an overturned coal wagon while its bell tower alludes to a miner's lamp. Centrally located are also the football field and bocci terrain.
The Municipality comprises of 23 communities: Brgod, Brovinje, Diminići (Sveti Lovreč Labinski), Crni, Drenje, Koromačno, Krapan, Kunj, Letajac, Most Raša, Polje, Raša, Ravni, Skitača, Stanišovi, Sveta Marina, Sveti Bartul, Škvaranska, Topid, Trget, Trgetari, Viškovići.
The most significant company today is the cement factory in Koromačno. The River Raša valley continues to provide extremely good conditions for agriculture and the Municipality has a wide access to the sea, enabling the development of the fishing trade. Tourism sector includes two campsites in Sv. Marina and Tunarica, and over two hundred private rooms and apartments for rent as well as a significant number of other smaller catering facilities.
