Labin

The town of Labin is the largest town in eastern Istria and the center of the municipality bearing the same name.
One part of the town, known as Podlabin, was initially founded as a mining settlement in the 1930s, and its mines provided the foundation for the town’s economy for a long period of time. Labin is the birthplace of Matija Vlačić Ilirik, a Reformer and the first associate of Martin Luther. Labin is also known for the famous Labin Republic that was proclaimed in 1921 (the uprising of the miners) and today it is a developed cultural and administrative center.

Perched on a hilltop above Rabac lies the medieval part of Labin, the charming Old Town with its rich architecture and cultural-historical monuments – churches, baroque and renaissance palaces, the baroque loggia on the central square, the People's Museum with a vast archaeological and ethnographic collection and the imitation of a mine with underground tunnels, numerous painting and sculpture studios, narrow tiled streets and enchanting views. Summer months are particularly interesting because of the Labin Art Republic, the event that offers a variety of cultural, entertaining and educational events in the entire town.
